his graphically exciting XL quilt probably dates to the mid-1800's. Supple from washing, sturdy and strong, its Indigo blue is wonderfully unfaded and still richly color saturated. The ivory fabric shows the quilt's age with light surface spots, stains and toning here and there throughout. But the bold, eye-catching graphics of the quilt are marvelously undiminished and surface imperfections do little to distract from all that grand, graphic two-tone visual power. SizeThe quilt measures a generous 82" x 96" . The on-point square blocks are about 1 foot or 12 inches square. The pieced elements of the blocks narrow at their squared corners to just over 1/2 inch or 5/8 inch wide. Quilting The hand-quilting is lovely, with tiny stitches numbering 6-8 to the inch, counting on the top side of the quilt only. Conforming echo outlines follow the pieced curves on the curved wedges, while an X spans the large pieces corner to corner, with smaller, concentric V shapes nesting under it. All of these closely spaced lines are just 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch apart. The quilting is in white thread on the ivory and in blue on the Indigo fabric. Construction The early quilt appears to be entirely hand-pieced. Binding, Batting & Backing The narrow self-binding is just the tiniest lip of the backing rolled from the reverse and hand-stitched tight on the front. It ranges around just 1/8 inch to 3/16 inch wide. It shows heavy thinning, holes, fraying and plenty of wear through, throughout, but appears to all still be attached with that tiny lip still stitched down tight on the front. (Description continues below.) Image 2 of 29 29 images with captions tell this quilt's story. Touch up and down hands at right to scroll through all 29 images. (Continued from above) The batting is very thin and completely even. The backing is a lovely, very faded, early Buff & Blue print with figured stripes now in the palest tones of tan and turquoise. It's pieced together from some random smaller pieces of the yardage. ConditionThe early quilt's condition is wonderfully strong and sturdy, but it shows it age and past use in many small surface stains and some tiny tear holes as well. A variety of toning, staining, spots and much more occasional small snag holes are visible throughout the quilt on the ivory portions of the pieced design. I think you can appreciate how little these distract form the quilt's overall visual impact though in the listing's first few images. Reserves I don't publicly disclose reserves, but am always happy to tell you a reserve privately if you just email me. I know this can help you decide which listings to bid on.
