Vintage bone and bamboo mah jong set, dating to the 1920's. Comes in original leather case and includes 148 tiles, 125 long counters, a tiny bamboo box holding 4 dice and a round box made of darkhorn, engraved in green Chinese hieroglyphics and containing some kind of round counters made of the same darkhorn. Also has a mint condition, self published book published prior to WWII, with detailed explanations, including many illustrations, about how to play the game. Box measures a little over 7 inches in length and has 5 compartments. Inside of box is entirelylined in blue silk, in amazingly good condition, considering the fragility of the fabric and the age of the box. The 148 tiles are made of bamboo below and bone above, joined with beautiful dovetails. Engraved and polychrome characters. T are 125 long counters, also made of bone. All in excellent condition, as are the tiles. 2 beautiful little containers, one made of bamboo, holds 4 tiny dice and the other of a dark horn/tort-shell with round, engraved disks inside. General condition is excellent with the exception of the case, which needs a strip of leather to re-join the lid at the back. The clasps in front and on the sides are in good condition.
