It was published by the Tokyo National Museum in 2008 as part of their exhibition of Japanese metal articulated creatures, animals, insects, and crustaceans that were made from the Edo era (1603 to 1868) through the Meiji era (1868 to 1912). During this time of peace in Japan, the decrease in demand for armor and weapons allowed metal artisans to express their creativity in the production of these fascinating objects of nature. From the tiniest insects to the largest snakes, these articulated works of art truly resembled and moved like their real life and mythical counterparts. The name Jizai Okimono was derived from one of the museum's collection of sterling silver dragons made by Satomi Shigeyoshi in 1907 who called his work "Jizai Dragon." Although these figurines have been around since the Edo era, t are no documents in Japan that exist as to what they were called during that time thus the name Jizai has permanently stuck. The text is in Japanese and the high quality detailed photos show the complexity of each work of art. Featured in the book are flying dragons, legged dragons, butterflies, Shachi (an imaginary sea beast), snakes, carp, spiny lobsters, fresh water prawns, crabs, hawks, praying mantis, bees, beetles, cicada, and centipede. T are a total of 40 pages with 74 images. This book is brand new and the condition is very good.
