A Book of Hours is a prayer book designed for laymen, a compendium of psalms, Bible verses, hymns, antiphons, and prayers for private devotional use. The book takes its name from a text called the Hours of the Virgin, a set of eight daily prayers meant to venerate the Virgin Mary. During a 250-year period beginning in the late 13th century, these little volumes—for they are almost always small enough to fit easily into the pocket of a modern jacket—were produced in greater number than any other single text. It was without the medieval best seller. With the advent of printing they became even more popular, and printed in great number by well known names as Hardouyn, Thielmann Kerver and Phillipe Pigouchet. This book of Hours is late, since it lacks the colophon, I can’t date it accurately, but somewhere around 1540/1550. Printed on Paper Unusual about this book is, that it is printed by one of the first female printers. Madeleine Boursette , who learned the trade during her marriage to the printer Francois Regnault at the mid 16th century. It is also not only in Latin but partly in French. DESCRIPTION Bound in 17th century red morocco. The binding does not belong to the book but it fairly nice. Size of the pages 17.5 cm. 64 miniatures. The woodcuts are less refined then in the earlier printed book of hours, See for example this book that I recently sold Having said this the miniatures are charming and I counted 64 in total. At least one, that of the month july is missing. Collates as A8toK8 = 144 leaves (two leaves missing, A1, and A8) and then A8 to K8 79 leaves, K 8 The text ends with the examine conscience. Since I do not have the printing year, I can’t determine how many page there should have been. General the book is in good condition, few pages are loose, 6 pages have some damage at the corners. So we have a book of hours here that has 223 leaves and that is profusely illustrated . At 1 euro to start Please read carefully! We are reliable dealers, you can return all items and get a refund.
