For auction is a large, gold-plated (vermeil) Art and Crafts-style CORO STERLING CRAFT frame pin showing two swans placidly swimming among flowers and cattails. The design is definitely influenced by the great Scandinavian silversmiths who had so much impact in the 1930s and 1940s on the look of American costume jewelry. This pin is in good condition, the sterling silver itself shows only the most minimum signs of age-appropriate wear. However, the gold plating is mostly gone; what remains, to my mind, makes the pin more beautiful and delicate in appearance than if the plating were bold and shiny. Not all collectors would agree with me so I am offering this pin strictly on an AS IS basis. The clasp is tight and secure. The design was patented in 1942 by Adolph Katz for Coro . Katz was not a designer but played a key role in choosing what designs Coro made for its major lines. I have included the drawing from the patent application for your reference. This drawing is also pictured on page 50, Julia C. Carroll, Collecting Costume Jewelry 202 .Looking around the net, I have not found another copy for sale. I interpret the pin's incomplete signature as STERLING CRAFT BY CORO but it could be STERLING CORO . The pin measures 2 by 1.25 inches (5.1 by 3.2 cm). Sterling Craft was Coro's sterling division from 1933 until World War II forced the closure of the English factory. Sterling production eventually moved to Mexico and Sterling Craft designs were now signed Norseland . It is possible to find jewelry with both names on it. Norseland closed in 1945. Sterling Craft found its design inspiration principally in the Arts and Crafts Movement and in contemporary Scandinavian silver jewelry. Coro was the largest manufacturer of costume jewelry in United States during the golden age of the 30's, 40's, and 50's. Many styles of Coro jewelry are avidly collected today.I will mail this pin to you, as soon as payment is confirmed, by first-class mail in a padded envelope.
