An early and elaborate bookbinder's decorative roll in the rococo style of the late 18th century. No visible maker's stamp but the form of both the wheel and the fork suggest a date between 1780 and 1800. The roll is 52mm in diameter and 15mm wide. Sadly the decorative edge is damaged for about one-third of its circumference so its use for binding is rather limited. I sold some similar rolls a couple of years ago for up to £200 each, but I have priced this one to reflect its condition. Firmly set in an iron fork, in an old hardwood handle (probably not original) with no charring, but cracked.
