Auction Description: "HIS MAJESTY" JUDD MANUFACTURING CIRCA 1925 It is my please to bring this rare set of Judd Company manufactured set of matched Lion bookends to this on line community. This set has been named “His Majesty by Louis Kuritzky and Charles DeCosta authors of their bookend book. I have had this particular set in my private collection for around 35 years but now selling all bookends except those from the Snead Iron Works. This is one of the sets most collectors seek out for they rarely come up for sale on Ebay or other antique shops or sales. This set stands but 5.50” inches tall, but is 8.50” long and 5.00” inches deep and weighs 15lbs. They will hold up and entire volume of books with ease. The base as with some of Judd’s sets is made of cast iron and the lion is cast of gray metal. The base is painted with Judd’s personal color style of green and black that looks similar to marble. The lion is a golden gilt color. The lions paint is thinned out with consistency over the body and the base coating has a few thinning area but over all are in wonderful aged condition. The only flaw to the metal is on the back base corner of one and it consists of a tiny nick less than a eighth of an inch in size and is covered when sitting in its normal position for holding books. . The felt coverings could very well be originals and if not are very old replacements. The lions are totally void of any type of breaks, splits, or missing parts. The missing spokes in the chariot wheel is made that way. These are listed in Collectors Encyclopedia of Bookends by Louis Kuritzky and Charles DeCosta and were priced four years ago at $225.00 and rated 5 of 5 for scarcity and are considered rare. The authors listed set is shown in the monochrome bronze whereas this set is polychrome finished. This set is also an original match.Bookend collectors will want this set since it is one of the rarest sets to find in matched pairs.
