It is my extreme pleasure to bring to Ebay this wonderful solid cast bronze pair of one of the most well known statues ever cast in modern history that being Auguste Rodin’s “The Thinker.” Rodin produced his first casting of 'The Thinker' in 1880 and then the life size statue in 1902 and publically shown two years later. The first cast sculpture can be found in front of Grawemeyer Hall on the University of Louisville Belknap Campus in Louisville, KY . Made in Paris , it was first displayed at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 and was then gifted to the city. This 'Thinker' sculpture was the only cast created by the lost-wax casting method. For additional information go to Wikipedia and search The Thinker. This set has been produced by several bookend makers over the years but all followed this rare bronze production by Judd Manufacturing. Armor Bronze, Ronson, Pompeian, and Verona Foundry all produced The Thinker but all were produced from around 1925 to 1937 and of course many other foundries made variations over the years. This set is one of the rarest sets of bookends you will find in this theme. Even though 'The Thinker' is common this solid bronze set is extremely rare and seldom available anywhere. Judd cast most of their items in cast iron and only their first run productions were cast in solid bronze. This set has been gilt in a deepened bronze coating with applied verdigris which has only been copied by a handful of bookend makers and of course the best know was Ronson and McClelland Barclay but neither had the durable finish Judd produced. If you want a very rare set of hand cast bronze bookends that never fall out of favor over time, this is the set you will want to purchase. I am selling this set with “Buy it Now” but will always accept offers. This matched set is numbered on the back side base with the early 9857 numbers which Judd used to mark their early expandable book slides. Knowledgeable collectors know the expandable book slides preceded nearly all bookends of the day. Also, a note to buyers nearly all late 1800 and early 1900 bookends were small in height but were usually heavier than modern bookend when close to the same size. This fact is accurate because many of the early books were much smaller and did not need taller bookends until later when books size was increased. Specifications: Height: 4.25”, Depth: 4.00” the pair, Width: 3.75,” Weight: 5lbs. Condition: Very nice set with some gilt wear to mainly the back or book side, slight wear to gilt exposing bronze metal to base edges. No oxidation. Original felt coverings are intact. Upside appreciate is excellent and are considered a very rare matched pair. Future upside appreciation can be expected from extremely rare bookends. This set will be no exception. These are so rare they have not been found and listed in any of the bookend guides PLEASE OBSERVE ALL PICTURES FOR THEY ARE PART OF THE DESCRIPTION AND DO NOT HESITATE EMAILING WITH ANY QUESTIONS YOU MIGHT HAVE ABOUT THIS ITEM. ALL CIRCA DATES ARE APPROXIMATE BUT ARE ACCURATE WITHIN 5 YEARS. PRODUCTON RUNS ALWAYS VARIED FROM ONE MANUFACURER TO THE OTHER.
