Auction Description Seven colors polychrome painted Olde English Coach and Horses is another exceptional works from the famous Kronheimer and Oldenbusch artists. It is my pleasure, once again, to offer this seldom seen K & O Metal Novelties Co. bookend treasure. The KRONHEIMER & OLDENBUSCH or K & O Company of Brooklyn, New York was in business from 1912 until 1943 and produced some of the most colorful and imaginative bookends from grey metal and bronze. This particular set is by far one of the liveliest colored sets you will see in todayâe(tm)s bookend market. Most polychrome bookends you find in todayâe(tm)s market place and online community are very drab colored and contain little of the original brightness when produced years ago. Not this pair, these remain in wonderful original condition with shades of bright red, blue, white, black, coral, bronze, and gold. Made in 1930 this set is not only one of the finest, but also one of the rarer and lesser seen sets. In my 39 plus years of collecting and selling I have owned this pair but twice, and these are in the best condition. K & O artists used some of the best permanent oil paints that have shown to hold up over 75 years of use. You will find this pair to be in excellent condition with the grey metal bronze gilt main coloring is 99.9% intact and in wonderful condition and contrary to the pics is consistently uniform around the entire set. The single driver atop the coach looks down on his pair team and seemingly may be dosing off for a nap. The coach curtains are bright white in color. The carriage lights are glowing in an orange-coral dim light color. The driverâe(tm)s hat and long cloak are raven black and his ankle length drivers type under apparel is a bright blue. The main parts of the coach as well as the bases and horses are clearly medium bronze gilt. The half coach doors are a bright red. The drivers folded hands are deep gold. All colors are again, 100% intact. These ends retain their original bottom coverings and are void from cracks, splitting, breaks, missing parts, or dents. T is a spot on the base that appears to have been slightly nicked and is about the size of a pencil lead located on the lower base area just to the right of the corner of the end that has an early life bump that is not even noticeable except with very close inspection. T are some slightly rough mold edges on the very bottoms next to the original green coverings but are not unusual for this type of castings. Facing the horses it appears that the right horse has ear damage and this is not the case . As you face both right horses, both bookends have been cast with slightly shorter ears and have no damage under magnification. These measure 5-1/2 inches high and are nearly 7 inches long. These useful piece's of art are a must for the discriminating buyer. One will be hard pressed to find another pair like these and certainly not in better condition. This piece weighs in at nearly five pounds and because of the unusual method of construction will have no problem holding up several books, if you so choose.
