Included in Brian North Lee's classic text British Bookplates (1979). E. Fitz-Gerald Lee wrote about this as follows: 'The bookplate of Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883), the poet and translator, famed for his Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam . It was drawn for him by his life-long friend William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863), the novelist. The angel was meant to portray Mrs Brookfield, wife of William Henry Brookfield who was depicted as Frank Whitestock in Thackeray's Curate's Walk . Fitzgerald's letter of 19th March 1878, quoted by Egerton Castle in his English Book-Plates, states that the ex-libris was 'done by Thackeray one day in Coram Street in 1842. "All wrong on her feet", so he said - I can see him now'. Thackeray had an early talent for drawing, which he studied in Paris; in addition to illustrations for publication he delighted in making caricatures to amuse children. Though this little plate lacks pretence to art, it is fascinating in its associations.' Dimensions of paper: 126x94mm; Dimensions of image: 58x35mm so there are wide margins. Condition: Excellent.
