This is a hand-woven Dayak Iban PUA KUMBU (tapestry) obtained from Janduok Iban Long House in Sarawak, Borneo Island. Its supernatural motifs are inspired by dreams and ancient animist beliefs by the Dayak women. The art of making and creating a pua kumbu covering cloth is an importance part of the tradition and belief that revolves around the life of the Iban people. Pua play a very significant role in the life and culture of the Iban people. They are used as decorative pieces, and especially for ritual, ceremonies or religious purpose: invitation to the gods; babys first bath; beginning of the farming festival; hornbill festival; bird festival; healing rituals; and most major ritual which is receiving of head trophies, a ritual which is no longer being practiced. Particulars pieces are also used for covering the sacred shrine erected during festival or ceremonies, where offerings are placed. The Pua are also used for protection of the living from harmful spirits as in the death ritual. Pua with ordinary patterns and designs are used during weddings, ad other festivals like Gawai Dayak Celebration. The Pua is painstakingly produced by ordinary villagers is like a window to the past. Over the generations, villagers pass on this skill to their children and their children's children. Only experienced and high-level weavers dare attempt potent designs. Some have the sanction of the deities, through dreams, and have been bestowed with spiritual assistance. During my last trip to Iban longhouse, I realized that the children of experience weavers would rather find work in the city than learning the skill from their mothers. It will not take long before the various types of weaving skills will disappear from this part of the world. So the next time you see hand-woven cloth, please think of how much time the weavers have invested in producing it.
