Welcome to Antiques & Moore!
This listing is for the most FABULOUS 19th Century BOSTON COIN SILVER 5-piece tea set you will ever find! It has been in my personal collection for the past 8-10 years and was purchased from a New York antiques dealer who told me it came from a member of the Forbes family in New York. Each piece is beautifully monogrammed on one side with the initials "M. F. G.". As far as provenance goes, you must be your own judge, however, the set speaks for itself with its quality and desirability! The tray was added later, however, it was made to exactly match the elaborate design of the tea set. It is not marked "Coin" so we are assuming that it is silver-plated and are selling the set with that assumption. The design on this stunning set is quite intricate with heavily chased branches with acorns and foliage that extend around the body of each piece leaving a center area on each side for monogramming. On the creamer, the monogrammed area is under the spout which is carved as a "mask" or "North Wind face". Each handle and the spout area of both teapots have the tree bark texture with branches having the acorn and foliage entwining each and both pots have two ivory heat-shield bands on each end of the handle. The tops each have a scalloped bottom edge design that matches with the shape of the top of the lower portion of the piece. The tops are further shaped in a raised rib design that extends from below the finial that is textured as feather-shaped leaves and ends with a raised leaf design. The finial top is an acorn extending up from a textured leaf design and each finial is a separate piece attached to the lid with a screw tightened on the inside of the lid. Each hinge is in original, tight condition and works properly. T is a raised "ringed" pedestal base on each piece. T is some variety in the marks on the 5-pieces of the tea set, however, each piece is either marked "Coin" or "Pure Coin", "Bigelow Bros. & Kennard" and "Boston". T is also a "logo" maker's punch which contains an eagle and initials below which appear to be "FL" on each piece. One piece is also further stamped with five of the eagle punch marks in a row in addition to all of the above marks. Bigelow Bros. were Boston silver makers from 1840 to 1845. I am not sure when Kennard was added to the mark, however, this silver set was unquestionably made in the early to mid part of the 19th Century when the use of Coin Silver was popular. The complete 5-piece Coin Silver set weighs 136.10 ounces (not including the tray which weighs about 7 pounds). The set consists of two identical pieces which could be considered as two teapots or a coffee pot and a teapot, a covered sugar, a covered creamer and an open "waste" which held hot water and teaspoons after they were used. This large set rests comfortably on a large silver tray which measures 27" long, 16 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" deep at the sides. The tray has a beautifully engraved interior with a large cartouche for monogramming that has not been engraved. The outer border of the tray has the same elaborate decoration as each of the Coin Silver pieces and is marked on the bottom with a "punch" mark that has an urn inside which, unfortunately, I am not familiar with the silver maker who used this mark. We were told that the tray was custom made to match the set at a later date and is silver-plated not sterling.Teapot #1: 7 7/8" high, 10" wide with a 4 3/8" diameter base, weighing 32 ounces Teapot #2: 7 7/8" high, 10 wide with a 4 3/8" diameter base, weighing 31.4 ounces Covered Sugar: 7 1/8" high, 8 1/4" wide with a 3 7/8" diameter base, weighing 26.1 ounces Covered Creamer: 7 1/2" high, 6" wide with a 3 1/8" diameter base, weighing 16.03 ounces Waste: 4 3/8" high with a 5 3/8" diameter top, weighing 31.2 ounces It was difficult to decide which photos to include in this listing as t was not adequate room to include all the photos I would have liked to attach.
