BOSTON , HARTFORD & ERIE RAILROAD COMPANY BOND 1868 Exceptionally attractive $1000 bond issued by the BOSTON, HARTFORD & ERIE RAILROAD COMPANY, 1868. Signed by John Eldridge, as President. Eldridge joined Jay Gould to keep the Erie Railway from falling under the control of Cornelius Vanderbilt. One of the most decorative 19 th century American railroad bonds ever produced. Features central vignette of a train in a station. Second vignette of female figure representing " Columbia ," along with an American eagle. Engraved and printed by the National Bank Note Company of New York . Striking black printing with green decorative border and "1000" underprint. Bond measures 25 1/2" X 14" including 60 attached coupons, each with vignette of a passenger train. Three high-value imprinted revenue stamps including two 5 cent Lincoln (RN-P4) and one scare $1 George Washington variety (RN-W2). Pristine, near-mint condition with ample margins, no cancellation marks of any kind. Fine example for framing and display.
