Botanical Field Microscope - Victorian Hand-Held Microscope Popular in mid 19 th century Microscope This is a pretty brass, hand-held microscope that was often used for field trips to ponds and natural settings to explore fauna and flora. The hand-crafted handle seems to be of bone which was common for the era and makes up the lower vertical arm of the microscope. The upper vertical arm supports two lenses (roughly 8mm and 10 mm diameter) embedded in brass housings that are roughly 12mm diameter. They both seem intact and I couldn’t see any aberrations while looking through the compound lenses. Extended, the microscope measures roughly 2.75” (front to back) x 3.75” (top to bottom). For focusing there is a knurled slider that moves the specimen holder (not original) horizontally into the view of the person looking through the lenses. The slider allows the vertical specimen holder to be moved up and down for better viewing of the object. The photo shows a section of cucumber for observation. The underside of the horizontal arm seems to have a chip (see photo), otherwise the microscope seems intact and in good shape. Most of the patina is still present. Both of the vertical arms swing back upon this horizontal extension arm to fold neatly for transport. Carrying Case The microscope neatly folds into the hand-made storage box which is not original and seems to be of walnut. It measures roughly 3.5” x 1.25” x 1.75”. Book: Note: You are not bidding on the text. It is included as a bonus for the winning bid. Single Lens – The Story of the Simple Microscope , by Brian Ford First American Printing, 1985 Condition: Overall, very good, with 11 chapters, 31 BW illustrations, and 182 pages. The book seems like new. It does not seem to have been opened before I read it. The text measures roughly 9.5” x 6.5”, and comes with a dust cover. Excerpt: While introducing Leeuwenhoek’s microscope, the author reflected. “This postage-stamp-size object is one of the most important instruments of scientific discovery. It changed our lives, altered our self-image and revolutionized our understanding of the world in which we live. Our modern-biology-oriented era of the cell nucleus, bacteria, and the whole gamut of microscopic organisms arose through the use of this little object.” Shipping charge encompasses the contintental US, only.
