Harper's New Monthly Magazine Bound volume of six issues Volume XXVII June to November, 1863 Harper & Brothers, N.Y. SIZE: This book measures 6 and 1/2 inches by 9 and 1/2 inches. It contains 864 pages, many of them illustrated. The name "I.E. Lyons" is embossed on the bottom of the spine. CONDITION: Good. The marble boards are rubbed, right through to the cardboard in spots. The leather spine and corners have edge wear. The binding is tight. The interior is tanned and the endpapers foxed. There are moisture marks on some pages that do not affect the text or images. There are occasional closed tears or chips on some pages. A charming bookplate (ex libris Caswell) is affixed to the inside front cover. CONTENT: This is a civil war era publication. These six issues include Scenes from the War of 1812; Battle of Antietam; a piece on cemeteries, an article on the Empress Eugenie, a monthly record of current events and a piece on the religious life of the negro slave. Among the fiction entries are "The Small House at Allington" by Trollope and "Romola" installments by George Eliot (aka Maryan C. Evans). There are articles on Indian Massacres and the War of 1862 as well as a black and white fashion plate depicting mourning wear. As always, Harper's is a reflection of the culture and tastes of the times.
