WONDERFUL example of an early Bowie knife and antique sheath.
The blade on this knife is older, dating 1860-90, with a stunning early style clip, and is a full .25 inch thick at the base. The blade appears forged - not cast steel like an English knife - very likely American and possibly earlier than dated. The knife is incredibly thick and sturdy all together!!! Measures 12.1 inch overall, with the killer 6.6 inch blade that is 1/4 inch thick. This knife seems much larger in your hand and is heavy. Blade is factory made, and not Sheffield - appears to be American composition steel and style. L.F.&C. "heavy-duty" blades from the 1860-70s were like this but the front clip was different, and they were not as thick. The cross-guard is frosted nickel-plated brass - with genuine age as you can see, and is extremely well-made and fitted. There is a patina where the sheath rests also. The handle is some sort of early celluloid 1860-1900, however it looks like carved b-ne. I have not seen this pattern before and I have seen many knives. The knife was re-handled but it is difficult to say when, it was likely cracked at the base, then mounted. The cream white color of the handle is slightly greenish around the cross-guard due to the age of the brass - the handle has been on for quite some time. The knife has the "original" sheath with a lot of genuine age also, the rivets are early enough, and there is cracking in the leather. This is a spectacular Bowie Knife in your hand and the pictures tell the story - it has nothing to hide! This displays very well as a genuine used item. This is the fourth time I have listed this Bowie Knife on Ebay. Twice it was removed by Ebay by mistake, once in the Wildlife protection policy because of the handle, then another time due to a clerical error in the re-listing process. The third time Ebay removed it - someone reported it as not being able to be used in the Civil War, as it was listed in that category. This is inaccurate - the blade is exactly the age to have possibly been used in the Civil War era. This category was always used as a place to sell pre-1900 knives, as I have sold knives and other antique items on Ebay since 1996 (only since 2000 with this moniker!). The knife is genuine and old, and the description of the knife is accurate in the dating to a relative certainty. This knife was traded to me by a very well known and respected Colt Gun Collector in exchange for some research that I did for him running down some information on the original owner of an old factory-engraved Montana Colt SA Army revolver that he purchased. The historical information I found may (and should) change the original Colt Factory Letter to correct an obvious mis-recording of the original owners name - thus the knife as a reward. I was pleased with the knife when I received it, as I am sure you will be. GUARANTEED ORIGINAL I have several Photographs, American Military items and Bowie Knives coming up - please note this.------- keep me bookmarked! NO RESERVE.
