This vintage medal is the well-known and prized one issued by the municipality of Dunkirk ("Dunkerque" in French) to commemorate the battle and mass evacuation of British and French troops t in late May and early June 1940, after the German Blitzkrieg broke through and, a few weeks later, utterly defeated France. This medal is still in its original box, with a mint-condition piece of ribbon and the little metal "fork" that the French and Belgians use to pin medals on with. The medal's pendant is a nicely detailed strike. Note the weird manufacturing technique with the suspension ring: why did they choose to solder the top ring to the "jump" ring instead of just passing it through? Go figure!Bottom line: this is a great-condition example of a fairly rare medal.
