BOXED COMPASS made by WILCOX, CRITTENDEN & CO. This beautiful compass was purchased from the estate of Commander M. L. Gilbert in May 2011 . He was the Captain of the USS Oglethorpe, AKA 100, from April 1, 1946 to June 31, 1948. The compass was made by Wilcox, Crittenden and Co. of Middletown, Connecticut and has the "WC" logo on the north point mark. The under side of the compass, which can be swung completely over, is stamped on its BRASS gimbal with "MADE IN USA" and the numbers "33-2" which I believe means February of 1933. I have seen other compasses with the base information ground off. The box is constructed with machine dovetailed corners and two brass swing clasps hold the lid shut when not in use. There is some paint splatter and scratches to box but it is complete and solid with the original patinaed finish. The compass is in good working order, always pointing to north when spun. It has a fairly dark field of view. The gimbal is made of solid brass, not painted black metal. The glass has some very fine scratches around the perimeter, I assume where the brass was polished. This compass is the large size, with a 5" diameter glass, the box measures 8.5" x 8.5" x 6" and weighs about 10 pounds. Please email any questions. Low opening bid with NO RESERVE.
