This lovely miniature sculpture portrays a little boy joyfully playing the drums and costumed with a lion mask for the Shishimai festival! SPECIFICATIONS:_______________COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Japan.DATE: 19th century.MARKS: Artist signature "Tokumitsu" and seal mark "Hidari Issan" located on the underside of the drum.MATERIAL: Boxwood with ivory and dark horn inlays. This beautiful 19th century boxwood netsuke by the noted artist Hidari Issan features a charming little boy costumed with a lion mask for the traditional Shishimai dance festival. He is actually hiding under the mask with its large cape and can tfore only be seen when we take a close look inside the lion's mouth! The lovely depiction is executed with fine detail and charmingly conveys the boy's fun of remaining unseen in his imaginative hiding place.The boy is playing a drum that shows inlays made of dark horn. Also the boy's as well as the Shishi's eyes are inlaid with ivory and dark horn.Hidari Issan of Aizu who called himself the lefthander Issan also used the name Tokumitsu. He is especially known for his naturalistic netsuke portrayals of snails, frogs and turtles.The Shishimai dance is performed on the first 3 days of the New Year as a prayer for a good harvest and a safe home.
