I have no idea on the age of this item. I do know it has been in our family for at least 45 years. Probably used in ceremony - never seen one like this before. Condition is worn, and some corrosion on blade, which has some intricate etching still visible, more so at the top of the blade than at the tip. The etching on both sides of the blade contains the image of an open book. The very tip of the sword has carbon (like it's been poked into a fire) and some other substance on it, which may clean off. I have not tried. Perhaps t is a secret Elk ceremony that involves marshmallows? Reads "BPOE" and has an elk image on one side of the hilt. Base of the hilt on the blade reads: Ames Sword Co. Chicopee, Mass. Measures 4.5 inches across hilt, 34 inches total length. T is very slight rusting at the joint w the blade meets hilt. The scabbard is still shiny in some areas, but has corrosion on the end cap (missing a small screw, and has a very slight dent) and at the bands w scabbard links are attached. Measures 29 inches long. Sword fits perfectly into the scabbard, and slides nicely. The leather is still in place on the sword hilt w it meets the top of the scabbard so no rattling will occur. I can find no other markings on the sword.Shipping: Item weighs 6 lbs with packaging. Box dimensions are 41x7x7 inches. Will ship only UPS 2 nd day
