Auction Description: ALL SERIOUS OFFERS WILL CERTAINLY BE CONSIDERED SO DO NOT HESITATE MAKING AN OFFER.BRADLEY & HUBBARD MANUFACTURING CO. 1854-1925 Bradley & Hubbard began in Meriden , Connecticut as a partnership of Nathaniel Bradley and Walter Hubbard in 1854. Initially they produced decorative clocks, vases, mirrors and other decorative metal objects. By the 1860s they began to produce lamps ... oil, gas, kerosene and eventually electric lamps. Bradley & Hubbard were best known for their bookends and lamps but their other products included chandeliers, candelabras and clocks (with movements often by Ansonia ) ... and produced among the world's finest metal wares of the late 19th/early 20th century. They seldom worked in bronze but their work is consistently mistaken for bronze, even by knowledgeable dealers. The height of the Bradley & Hubbard foundry's business was 1854-1920. B&H products are always excellent examples of their genres and consistently command higher prices than those of their closest competitors (like Chase, Jennings Bros , Connecticut Foundry, LV Aronson, etc.). Further, their values are escalating significantly faster than comparable pieces. It is my pleasure, once again, to offer this most difficult to find BRADLEY AND HUBBARD set of bookends to this online community. Made in the early to mid roaring 20âe(tm)s this wonderful set is not only one of the finest, but also one of the rarest and least seen sets and I have personally owned only a couple of times in 40 years of collecting and selling fine antiques and collectibles. This particular set was cast in the oldest method of metal casting, called sand casting. To appreciate the complexity of sand casting see the 1997 edition of Gerald McBrideâe(tm)s, âe~Collectors Guide to Cast Metal Bookendsâe(tm) which explains in detail the steps of casting objects using the centuries old method of using pure sand as the major step in molding metal items. This pair depicts a single mast âeoe Viking Shipâe in full sail with a fairly brisk tail wind as shown in the waves moving in the same direction as the bold ship. This is truly a collectorâe(tm)s delight in ship bookends. As most Bradley and Hubbard cast metal pieces display, these are a fine example of the true craft of metal artisans. The detailing of the ship body right down to the splashing waves and crispness of the workmanship is shown in this set. One can actually see in the close up pictures the hats on the deck hands heads. The highly polished brass plating is still as new looking as when the ends were produced some 83 years ago. The set is in fine to excellent condition with nearly no wear to the golden finish. I have seen this set a few times over the past 40 years of collecting and selling fine cast metal items, but I have never seen this set in any finer condition. One would think they were brand new out of the box, but I guarantee they are old and original Bradley and Hubbard bookends and they are signed on the back side with the old B & H logo. They are in their original found condition with no cracks, breakage, or missing metal. Please look at the actual photos below to see what is being offered. I take clear and precise pictures and do not computer enhance with special effects, texture softening, or color alterations to make my items difficult to tell what is being auctioned.
