We are pleased to offer several model yacht fittings thatare suitable for the restoration of vintage boats (please see our other items).
This auction is for a Braine type self steering quadrant that is suitable for medium size boats with hulls in the 22âe to 40âe range. (See our other auctions for units suitable for other size hulls.) This quadrant measures 2 1/2" wide by 3" long and features a bent tail with a rectangular opening for the centering line and a rudder post boss bored for a 5/32" shaft. The boss is threaded for set screws or a through bolt. Included with each quadrant are stainless steel Allen set screw, Allen wrench, brass through bolt and 4 phosphor bronze sheet hooks, plus notes on installation and a copy of our catalog of vintage model yacht fittings. (Note: other rudder shaft diameters can me provided on special order.)
Like original vintage fittings, these are hand made of polished brass. They have not been lacquered as most of our customers want their fittings to develop a brass patina to match remaining fittings. Please see our Bio and notes for more information on our company.
Braine steering gear was invented in 1904 by George Braine, a revered member of London âe(tm)s Kensington Gardens Model Yacht Sailing Association. This simple but effective self-steering system was used very extensively on both competition and recreational boats. Braine steering quadrants are mounted to the rudder shaft and connected by sheet hooks and lines to either the main boom or the jib club boom. Please send questions before you bid.
