Hand Crafted Brass: Brass vessel casting is done over a solid clay model on a hand-lathe with a layer of prepared wax. The model is covered with a thick layer of clay in which a hole is made through which the molten wax is removed to be replaced by molten metal.Chasing, a technique w light impression designs are done on the metal surface. In this technique a blunt chisel is used and only trace imprints of the design are done on the metal surface. The intricate designs are etched into the metal. This artwork is done on plain or gilded brass vessels w the floral ornamentation in relief work. The chased areas are filled with black Ink which is fused to the surface. The floral designs glitter against a black background. The Ink comes in a variety of colors. Another form of Brass Hand Crafted Artwork is Called Bidri/Inlay on Metal. Bidri is a unique metal ware technique found only in India. It is a form of encrusted metal ware, w on metal is inlaid on to another. The beauty of barware lies in the striking contrast of colors, with the glossy silver, brass, or gold inlay being set off by the matt black metal. The craft of bidriwork is believed to have originated in Bidar. Bidri products include a diverse range of products including hookah bases, bowls, boxes, candle stands, trays, ashtrays, vases, jewelry, and buttons. The motifs vary from floral arabesques and intricately patterned leaves and flowers to geometric designs. The technical processes involved in the making of barware are complex and include casting, designing engraving, inlaying, blackening, and polishing. The item is first cast with the help of a mould of red clay into which a molten solution is poured. The engraving tool, a metal chisel of varied shapes and points is used to engrave the designs, which are drawn in free hand. This beautiful Aftaba is all hand crafted taking the skilled craftsman several weeks to complete. It has brilliant colors of red, blue, and white with a intricately etched floral leaf design.
