Up for auction is a mermaid unlike any I have seen, She is stretched out on a rock in the sea bekoning the sailors ashore, the waves roll around her rock, this part is not very unusual, right? If you look at the detail she has fins coming off her hips on each side and a back fin going to her tail. Also, unlike many, her scaly tail starts below her buttocks so that part is bare too. Her arm is outstretched and I can almost her her saying " come here and see me you strong hansome Sailor boys!" The base measures 3" x 8" and the height is 6" to the top of her hand... Iv'e always said if something looks like it should be broken (her arm in the air) and it is not then it is a good piece! I see nothing that hurts the appearance of the very nice item. If you take a look at the base there are scallop shells and then in the center there is a smoother piece of metal...at one time someone finely scratched "Elma" on that piece on both sides. You dont see it unless you really look close, it is that fine. It appears that there was felt on the bottom, it has long sense gone. A very very nice piece, it is guaranteed old. Look at the detail and design of her, when is the last time you sdaw a mermaid like this one.. she is unusual and unique, a real prize for that Nautical room!
A customer asked how I knew this item was brass or bronze, my response was it looks like it and it feels like it as it is quite heavy. I had rubbed a spot down the back fin and a brighter brassy color showed up. I also think it is because brass because where someone scratched Elma on each side it did not show any other metal than brass. He suggested it may be a Spelter however I don't know how to check for that. Either way it is a very handsome piece of art and unusual, Thanks.
