10" brass dial engraved "Yeoman Gisbrough', with 30 hour movement. The dial was mounted on the movement when I obtained it but the holes in the front of the movement indicate that it is not original to the dial, though certainly old. Someone had the movement cleaned and running for me, but during a household move a mounting post broke away from the dial (it's still attached to the edge of the front plate of the movement, but the plate hole is right on the edge, not fully encircled, so it should be repositioned), and I also lost the pendulum along the way.
The man who cleaned it for me found a listing for a clockmaker named Yeoman in Guisborough, England, from 1690-1700. (The spelling on the dial is slightly different - Gisbrough.) He said the listing was in Vol. I of "Watchmakers/Clockmakers of the World" page 351, London, 1929, 1947. I don't have the book so I can't verify that. An interesting oddity about this dial is that it has just 4 minute markers - tfore actually 75 second markers - between each numeral, so a total of 48 rather than 60. This will be an interesting project for someone. It would look best in a simple case; a relatively short flat top in oak or pine would be most authentic. **** Someone who knows more about this than I do wrote to tell me that the reason for the 4 divisions rather than 5 is that the dial originally belonged to a one-handed clock, so that each marker represented 15 minutes.
