You are bidding on a 38.7 gram slice 7 X 35 X 43 mm of the Brenham Pallasite. Very thick slice with nice fusion crust on two edges. This meteorite comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from the Kansas Meteorite Society. It also comes with a Specimen Card. Both sides of this unique piece has been polished to a mirror finish. We take great care in handling these rare pieces by not allowing any water in the cutting and polishing process. Brenham was first recognized as a meteorite in 1882 by F.W. Cragen of Washburn University in Kansas. Since that time over 3 tons has been recovered from Kiowa County Kansas. Pallasites are thought to originate in the boundary between the core and the mantle of large asteroids. They are considered to be the most attractive of all the meteorites being composed of olivine crystals embedded in a iron/ nickel matrix. Although olivine itself is not considered to be a gemstone, peridot, the magnesium rich occurance, green in color is considered to be a gemstone and has a history that extends back over 4000 years. Peridot is mentioned in the bible and was referred to in acient time as "evening emerald", and was reported to be the favorite gemstone of Cleopatra. Although olivine, typically yellow to orange in color, is common in the Brenham pallasite, the green peridot crystals are more rare and more collectible. The specimen you are bidding on is from a recent recovery near the large end of the strewn field and possesses many attractive green peridot crystals.
