marked 18 carat gold hunter case inscribed in rear John W. Clous/Brig. General/United States Army, case maker marked B.W.C. inside cover inscribed Presented to D.D. Bickham Sept. 1, 1908 and movement marked Appleton Tracy & Co. Waltham, Mass., white enameled dial with Roman numerals with second hand dial and American Watch Co.; movement is 50mm, case is 56mm. John Walker Clous (1837-1908)had an illustrious career in the U.S. Military. An immigrant from Germany, he served during Civil War in the 9th and 6th U.S. infantry, working his way through the ranks from Private to staff officer. He was twice breveted for bravey at Gettysburg, and left the Civil War as a Captain. After the war he continued to serve, as acting A.D.C. for Sheridan in the Indian Wars, and various other Adjutant offices. He was commended for gallant conduct in 1872 for his part in the Battle of the North Fork of the Red River in Texas. During the Spanish American War he served on the staff of General Nelson Miles. He completed his career serving in the Judge Advocate`s office, rising the to rank of Brigadier General and Judge Advocate General in 1901. A stunning watch from a `lifer.`
