's another auction by Lone Star Trains and Collectibles, South Texas' Classic Era Train Headquarters! You are bidding on a railroad pass from 1884 issued for the short-lived Virginia Narrow Gauge line known as the Brighthope Company Railway. It is pass number 367. The line lasted about 14 years. It was issued to Mr. AB Frey of the Saratoga, Mt. McGregor and Lake George Railroad. This is a hair larger than the regular size and stock kind of pass. It is 4 1/8" x 2 7/16". The pass does have some very minor yellowing to it, and some minor edge soiling from handling. Note, too, that the upper left hand corner has some of the corner rubbed off and t are a few brown/black dots t like it wa at one time close to a flame. Structurally, it is nice. T is also something embossed on it. I think it is a seal for the American Bag Company with the date of 1887, I think; I cannot make out the name in the center of it.AB Frey This one was issued to a Mr. AB Frey, who was the Secretary and Treasurer of the Saratoga, Mt. McGregor and Lake George Railroad. His pass was good for the year until December 31, 1884. Mr. Frey later went on to own a profitable limestone quarry. I have found a 1892 reference to his quarry being located in New York at the Palatine Bridge on the North Side of the Mohawk River. T is also a reference to the Frey Mansion. Even later, t is a reference to him as a judge and a director of B'Nai B'Rith. About the Brighthope Company Railway...The Brighthope Company Railway s tarted life as the Richmond and Petersberg, which was a Civil War era railroad. John W. Johnson bought the failed R&P and reorganized it as the Bright Hope Railway and Coal Co in 1875. In 1881 the line was converted to 3’ rail narrow gauge, making it one of the few railroads to actually convert form Standard Gauge to Narrow Gauge. The line was extended 11 miles to Bermuda Hundred, allowing for coastal loading. In 1905 it reorganzied as the Tidewater Western. Interestingly, the Annual Report of the Railroad Commissioner of the State of Virginia 1886 lists the railroad as having been organized June 22, 1877 ut of a road built in 1853 by the Clover Hill Mining Comany which sold it under forclosure April 26, 1877 and then reorganized later that year. The line t is listed as from Eppes Falls,Virginia to Bermuda Hundred, a total of 32.75 miles with branches laid of 5.7 miles. About the Saratoga Mt McGregor and Lake George... The narrow gauge railroad Saratoga, Mt. McGregor and Lake George Railroad incorporated February 27, 1882 and ran between Saratoga Springs and Hotel Balmoral on top of Mt. McGregor. Construction began on March 17, 1882, and completed on July 17, 1882. The railroad went through the towns of Saratoga Springs, Wilton, Moreau, and Corinth. Unfortunately, in December 1897, the hotel at the top of the mountain burned. After foreclosure proceedings on March 6, 1893, the hotel and railroad property were sold in auction. We picked this pass up in a collection of very tough to find passes from the 19th Century. PLEASE watch our auctions over the next few weeks to see all of them (at least the ones we are willing to turn loose of...).Don't forget to check out our other classic toy trains auctions for more railroadiana!
