Great Books of the Western World54-Volume Set Britannica (1952) Description: This complete vintage hardcover set contains all 54 volumes from the 1952 first edition. The books are in Acceptable or better condition on averages, some significantly better than others. Some volumes may have wear from use and/or shelf storage and/or contain occasional pencil markings. No pen markings have been noticed. Many of the volumes have frayed cloth covers in spots, particularly along the tops of the spines. The final volume (Freud) has spine damage that obscures the volume number, but this one can be replaced fairly inexpensively. This set has been in my possession since about 2004, when I purchased it for use while teaching at a small classical school. I suspect I am the second owner; all of the pencil markings I have seen seem similar in style. This is a wonderfully useful set to serve as a launching pad into the great literature of the Western tradition, whether you are a formal educator, homeschooler, or general interest reader. The first volume, The Great Conversation by Robert Maynard Hutchins, is a modern classic in its own right for educators in the liberal arts. A complete volume listing follows: 1. The Great Conversation 2. The Great Ideas I 3. The Great Ideas II 4. Homer 5. Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, Aristophanes 6. Herodotus, read more
