This is a beautiful, well-cast British model 1803 Infantry Officer's Sword. This is a ubiquitous sword of the Napoleonic Wars. This example is much more embellished than others we have had over the years. The lion head pommel is beautifully done, with a flowing mane and decoration forming the backstrap of the grip. In addition, the langets and knucklebow are nicely done -- especially the Greek key motif on the quillion. T remains traces of gilt throughout. The blade is gracefully curved with a clipped point. T is a maker's name just under one of the langets, but we cannot quite make it out -- appears to begin with an "H". T is a very clear George III cypher -- GR -- and other decorations on the blade. The grip retains about 80% of the sharkskin covering. The blade is dark with age and the hilt is by no means pristine. Nevertheless, this is an important piece for your Napoleonic collection and well-marked. Overall, the sword is 34 1/2 inches straight across, and the blade is 30 inches straight across. A very nice piece being offered at a low starting price and a reserve well below its value.
