This is a British 1826 "Thomason" so called dollar medal, made to commemorate the completion of the Erie Canal - a feat that created a navigable water route from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic. The item was acquired from an estate and it is in good "as-found" condition. The medal is 3" in diameter, made of white metal with embossed detailing. This medal is very similar to the medals designed by Archibald Robertson, engraved by Charles Cushing Wright and struck in America for the celebration. But the striking of this medal was done in England by Edward Thomason, a Birmingham England diesinker. The striking was done at Thomason's own factory in England. (The imagery on this medal is a bit larger in format than the striking on the American version of the commemorative medal.) One side of this medal features the New York State coat of arms with a bit of the canal, a sailing ship and a view of a city in the distance. It reads: "Erie Canal Commenced 4 July 1817 Completed Oct (small underlined R) 1825." Below the image is a tiny mark at the center bottom - "Thomason." The obverse of the medal shows Pan and Neptune with a lighthouse and the sea in the distance. It reads: "Union of Erie with the Atlantic."
