A good example of a General Service Medal (GSM) bar South Arabia to Pte B. Lemons PRINCE OF WALE'S OWN (PWO) Regiment. The medal is also known as the Campaign Service Medal (CSM). The medal was instituted in 1962 and continued to be awarded for minor military campaigns until 2007, when it was replaced by the Operational Service Medal. The bar South Arabia was awarded to servicemen that had completed 30 days, or more, during the 'Radfan Campaign' over the period August 1964 and November 1967. The 'Aden' Campaign was fought against Egyptian-backed insurgents that sought to end the British presence in Aden and the newly formed Federation of South Arabia (modern day Yemen). Although classed as a 'small war' it was pretty intense for those that took part; 90 servicemen killed and over 500 wounded. The PWO was formed in 1958 following the amalgamation of East Yorkshire Regiment and the West Yorkshire Regiment. The regiment was itself amalgamated into the Yorkshire Regiment in 2006. Aden was the PWO's first overseas deployment, deploying to the former British colony in September 1958, returning again in 1965.
