British Officer's Mameluke-Style Sword, ca. 1820-1830, no maker's mark, 29" curved scimitar blade with clipped point, 34.5" overall length, two-piece ivory grip secured by brass rosettes, brass crossguard with foliate designs, ivy garlands etched on both sides of polished steel blade, which also is decorated with the cipher for King George IV, polished steel scabbard with brass mounts.
This sword is likely the immediate predecessor to the celebrated 1831 Pattern British General Officer's Sword. Mameluke blades appeared in European hands during the Napoleonic Wars and were championed by notables such as Arthur Wellesly, the Duke of Wellington. - Chip to ivory on one side, missing one grip rosette, etching considerably worn, but royal cipher remains clear, mellow patina to ivory elements, light rusting on otherwise bright scabbard. Overall very good condition and attractive.
