16th Queen's Lancers Victorian Officers lance cap. Bought at Bosleys Auction 9th June 2004 (lot 809) by current owner.
Catalogue description was: "A good example. The skull of black patent leather with the upper portion of black melton cloth, with gold gimp cord across the top and down the angles. To the left side is a gold bullion rosette and embroidered VR cypher onto a scarlet velvet ground. This supports black feather plume (replacement). The gilt lance cap plate is mounted with silvered Royal Arms, battle honours and title scroll. Patent leather peak with gold bullion lines. Gilt metal lion head bosses support chin chain with velvet backing. Leather sweat band and crimson silk lining to the interior. The overall condition is good, with some wear and dulling to the gilt. Gilt metal plum boss absent." Please note following: A correct replacement gilt medal plume boss has been added and is included with this lance cap. Also (not mentioned in auction description) part of headliner is missing 2-3 inch strip that surrounds the inside leather liner. Also plume retaining screw is likely a replacement. Makers name "Hawkes and Co. London" in gold block stamped inside. No mothing!!!! - all parts except w stated original (feathers, screw and period replacement plume holder). Cap shape excellent (ie. not misshapen as can happen) Sold at ebay reserve less than (2004) auction price. A really good example of a rare and original Victorian Lance Cap. Part of my (too large) lance hat collection and guaranteed to be original.
