Two page autographed letter dated 1855 and signed by the 14th earl of Derby. Paper and signature are in good condition. Derby, Edward George Geoffrey Smith Stanley, 14th Earl of 1799-1869 English statesman Born at Knowsley Hall, Lancashire, he was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, and entered parliament for Stockbridge in 1820. In 1830 he became Chief Secretary for Ireland and in 1833 Colonial Secretary. In this capacity he carried the emancipation of West Indian slaves. In 1831 he seceded from the Whigs and, declining to join the administration under Sir Robert Peel , he and his supporters maintained an independent position. In 1844 he resigned his Commons seat and went to the Lords as Baron Stanley of Bickerstaffe. When Peel attempted to repeal the Corn Laws, Stanley headed the Protectionists in the Upper House, and was seen as Conservative leader. In 1851 he succeeded his father as Earl Derby and briefly became Prime Minister. He returned as premier in 1858, but resigned the following year on a vote of confidence. Returning to power in 1866, he passed the Reform Act of 1867 in conjunction with Disraeli , to whom he passed the premiership in 1868.
