A fine hand-coloured engraving from the mid 19th century depicting the surrender of the British after the Revolution to Washington and his troops at Yorktown,Virginia in October 1781.Black ink engraving with added watercoloured accents in rich blues and reds to the troop vestments,with some yellow to their adornments and Washington`s horse saddle.The scene depicts the American troops to the left and British to the right,with Washington and Cornwalis in the foreground.General Lafayette stands in the middle as mediator.The engraving has a classical outdoor scene,the surrender taking place within a clearing between trees,with a classical pillar monument and urn atop a hill in the backdrop and the Three Graces as witnesses.T is indecipherable writing on the urn which may be a Latin inscription.Scripted at the base of the engraving is the phrase "The British surrendering their arms to Gen.Washington after their defeat at Yorktown,Virginia October 1781".Above it are the small scripted names of the prominent soldiers present,including Rochambeau,Washington,Knox,Lafayette,Louzon and Cornwallis.The engraving is set in a black wood frame of 12 3/4 X 10 1/2 inches.It has a black foil mat and gold line border around the engraving.The engraved scene measures 8 X 6 inches.Re-covered back with modern paper backing and eyelit wire hanger.The print read more
