A fantastic period cigar/ cigarette box presented to F/Sergeant T Mottershead RFC VC DCM from the officers mess in France 1916, box is made of fine oak with bronze fittings and a shield type plaque to the front inscribed "To F/Sergeant T.Mottershead DCM From Officers Mess France 1916", to the top is a dome shaped Royal Flying Corps badge. This box was presented to T.Mottershead who was the only RFC non commissioned officer in ww1 to be awarded to Victoria Cross, presented before he won the Victoria Cross and was most likely a gift on him winning the Distinguished Conduct Medal from the officers mess, this is an great piece of history and worthy of a good collection. Thomas Mottershead was born on 17 January 1892, one of a family of 10. [citation needed ] Mottershead married Lilian Bree on 10 February 1914, and was working as a garage mechanic when World War I began. Prior to enlisting in the Royal Flying Corps on 10 August 1914 as a mechanic, [1 ] Mottershead had studied engineering and had been apprenticed as a fitter working in Widnes .[ citation needed ] He was posted to the Central Flying school at Upavon and was promoted to Sergeant on 1 April 1916.
