I have 8 pieces of broken slate up for auction as one lot. When I first started collecting artifacts, slate appealed to me. The Native American artists often incorporated the natural banding of the slate into their finished pieces & this impressed me quite a bit. Unfortunately these are not only the most expensive type artifacts to collect but they are also the easiest to fake. Once I realized I was gambling with my money buying slate, I resolved to collect hard stone artifacts which are the most difficult to fake. But I continued to buy broken pieces of slate when I could. I now have a very nice collection & these pieces are duplicates. In fact, speaking of fakes, I bought a large collection of broken pieces ~15 years ago from a very honest dealer and over 1/3 of them had obvious new drill holes & grinding. I am certain the dealer I got them from didn't know the collector they came from was practicing hole drilling techniques on the common pieces. In my opinion, these 8 pieces are all 100% as they were found and are excellent examples of what unaltered slate artifacts should look like. Most old time collectors coated their 100% authentic slate artifacts with oil/grease to bring out the beauty of the banding. Unfortunately, this grease also makes new pieces look old. I am starting the bidding for this lot at $40 [$5/each] There are read more
