This 8" bronze statue is of the Hindu God, Ganesh, one of the five major Hindu deities. In the Hindu tradition, Ganesh was created from the flesh of Parvati, wife of Shiva. Ganesh was to stand guard while Parvati bathed, not allowing anyone to enter. When Ganesh refused to allow Shiva to enter, Shiva became enraged and cut off his head. Parvati insisted that Shiva restore her son. The first animal that Shiva saw was the elephant and attached its head to Ganesh's body. Ganesh is the Lord of success and destroyer of obstacles. He is worshipped as the god of education, wisdom, and wealth. This depiction of Ganesh is actually from the 12th century Buddhist iconography, the Sadhanamala. Here Ganesh has 12 arms, each with a weapon or ritual article of protection. He balances on one foot atop his vehicle the mouse. Ganesh's face has been hand-painted in gold leaf. Ganesh has a third eye, white tusks, and bright red ears with coiled serpents. Imported from Nepal . Unique Gifts from Around the World
