You are bidding on Beautiful Bronze Statue of a Male Lion & Serpent with a Black Marble Base in excellent condition. Lion and Serpent was first exhibited as a life size plaster by Barye at the Paris Salon in 1833. This acknowledgment by the King of animal sculpture was to be a turning point in the acceptance of animals as an appropriate subject for art. This monument was to be installed at the gardens of the Tuileries Palace before being moved to the entrance of the Louvre, w it is today. A similar example of this variation is located at the Walthers Museum in Baltimore, Md. and is illustrated in The Barye Bronzes a Catalogue Raisonne read more
