BRONZE PAIR AFRICAN NEGRO MAN AND WOMAN FRENCH 19th CENTURY French Late 18th/Early 19th Century Pair of Beautifully Rendered Busts of Negro Man and Woman Two Bronze Busts, 10" high on bases This is a pair of busts, one of an African black man, one of an African black woman, with a beautiful workmanship and lovely patina. They were used as fireplace mantle decorations in Helena Rubenstein's home and were purchased by Mr. Dubin at an auction of her artworks in the early 1950s. These bronzes are from a Major Collection of African American artworks being offered by the Artifax Gallery in New York through auctions on eBay. Artifax is a well-known antique business in Manhattan for over 30 years with a long-standing reputation with Sotheby's and Christie's. Mr. Dubin, curator of this group of works, is a dealer of art and antiques who has been active in the field for more than 50 years and who works primarily in Manhattan, Paris and London. Mr. Dubin states that this is an important collection of African American paintings, drawings and sculptures due the fact that Black American subjects were not always noticeable in art. This situation has been somewhat changed in the present day, though fine early examples in this genre are considerably rare.
