Important bronze sculpture of a seated nude woman artist signed E. Cadorin. Ettore Cadorin (1876-1952) sculptor born in Venice, Italy on March 1, 1876 into a long line of artists. A student of Rodin. After studying in Venice at Academie Royal Des Beaux-Arts and in Paris, Cadorin came to the U.S. in 1915 and worked at Columbia University. He moved to California in 1925 to teach drawing and sculpture at the Santa Barbara State Teachers' College. During the 1940's he was a resident of San Francisco. Cadorin died in Sonoma County, California on June 18, 1952. He was a member of the National Society of Sculptors. He was awarded first medal, Academie Royal des Beaux-Arts, Venice; decorated by King of Italy with Cross of Chaevalier Officer of the crown of Italy. Works held: Santa Barbara County Courthouse (fountain and sculptures); Statuary Hall, U.S. Capitol, Washington, D.C. (bronze statue of Junipero Serra); Los Angeles Civic Center, Saint Marks Square and Wagner Memorial Venice (statues). He was listed in the American Art Annual in 1929-1933. He is listed in Who's Who in American Art 1936-1947; Who's Who in California; Southern California Artists; Benezit; Contemporary American Sculpture; Dictionary of American Painters, Engravers and Sculptors (Fielding) and well listed in Artists in California 1786-1940 by Edan Milton Hughes. This is an extremely important sculpture by this wonderful artist. The importance of this find cannot be overstated. He was one of the few California sculptors whose magnificent creations were recognized in his life time. It is almost impossible to find examples of his works for sale. The provenance of this piece is that of belonging to Lovie Cadorin. This sculpture has a lovely patina. Height 12 1/2 inches, width 12 inches, depth 8 inches. Excellent condition. To acquire an extraordinary sculpture of this quality by this artist is indeed a special opportunity for a museum curator, advanced collector or dealer to purchase one of the finest sculptures created by this California Impressionist.
