10th Century Thailand Gold Gilt Bronze Buddha Head This bronze Buddha head from Thailand was a buried piece that was probably naturally broken off of a full-bodied Buddha figure, as there are no signs of forced removal. This head has all of the natural degradation and mineralization consistent with a bronze item that has been buried for over 1000 years. Under microscopic analysis it shows original Malachite, Azurite, Ceresite, and Cuprite growth naturally occurring as the bronze degrades back to its original components. This Buddha was also originally 22-24 karat gold-gilt, and still shows the gold in crevasses over its entire surface. On top of all the original mineralization, this exquisite piece is speckled with thousands of sparkling, original, manganese deposits, which are an essential part of authenticating real items. There are no black paint specks, or burnt-on-sugar simulations which are typically used to simulate ancient bronze patinas. This beautiful piece is absolutely in-situ condition with no signs of 'cancer'. The Buddha's head has its original black clay core, which was part of the casting process. This exquisite example of early Thailand art has never been repaired, or re-poured. The head has been mounted on a museum-quality display stand, and would be a welcome addition to any world class collection. The piece is 4-3/4" high (not measuring the stand) and 2-1/2" wide. With the display stand the piece is 7-1/2" tall. This piece is from the Estate of Mr. & Mrs Robert H. Canny. The Canny's lived in California, and acquired their collection between 1900 and 1950. This piece is a PRE UNESCO Treaty item, and can never be re-claimed from the United States. We purchased this item directly from the family member who inherited the item and has relocated to Tucson. This bronze has been authenticated by Dr. Timothy Jones, PhD, Anthropologist, formerly with the University of Arizona. Dr. Jones has accepted invitations to the world's largest museum in Beijing, and has received privately guided tours of the Beijing Museum, which included some of the most treasured vault items hidden away from the general public. Dr. Jones has directed the excavations and analyses of more than 20 major sites and 40 archaeological surveys, both here and abroad. Dr. Jones now runs his own appraisal and authentication business, and is certified RPA-IAA. Dr. Jones can be reached at . This bronze Buddha head has also been authenticated by Fred Gumbart. Mr. Fred Gumbart is the owner/appraiser of Arizona Galleries. He specializes (by appointment only) in consultations, and he is an official, licensed, and accredited appraiser of Fine Period Antiques, Fine Art, Ethnographic Art, Pre-Columbian Art and the Asian Arts. Special Note: All items offered by The Felix Finds predate the UNESCO Treaty Laws and may be re-sold with impunity or gifted to either a Public or Private Museum of choice unless otherwise noted.
