For you consideration is this extremely rare and beautiful period authentic bronzed set of Art Nouveau / Art Deco Lion of Lucerne bookends by Jennings Bros in Very Good Collectors Condition. C 1900 Measuring 5 inches in height X 7 1/2 inches in length X 3 inches in depth or width these are period original solid nice bookends. Wonderful aged deep bronzed and olive green patina and minimum wear and use indicators as commensurable with their age. Aged patinated bronzed surface highlights a wonderful presentation of the mortally wounded lion and is highlighted even more so with the old olive green toned patina. Original felt bottoms on both and marked "JB 1670." See All Images....................... If you are familiar with the Lion of Luncerne monument in Switzerland then you know that it was designed by Bertel Thorvaldsen and carved out of rock near Luncern , Switzerland from 1820 through 1822 by Lukas Ahorn. The Lion is of course, is in commemoration of the Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792. The guards were killed storming the Tuileries Palace in Paris , France during the French Revolution. Of the Swiss Guards defending the Palace, more than 600 were killed during the fighting or massacred afterward. The monument is dedicated Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti (To the loyality and bravery of the Swiss). The dying lion is portrayed impaled by a spear, covering a shield that bears the Fleur – De – Lis of France . Beside him is another shield bearing the coat of arms of Switzerland . The inscription below the sculpture, list the names of the officers and soldiers who both died and survived the battle. The American writer Mark Twain praised the sculpture of the mortally wounded lion as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world. If you are familiar with the Jennings Brothers Manufacturing Company then you know that they operated a foundry in Bridgeport , Connecticut and made a wide variety of quality metalware products. The company started production in 1891 and grew rapidly to become one of the most successful foundries in America . This is a superb rare set of Lion of Lucerne bookends by Jennings Bros that will stand out no matter where you display them.
