Large Pair of Empire/Gothic Revival, neo-classical bronze decorative ewers, commonly known as urns. Circa 1830-1847?Amazing detail, depicting classical Roman/Greek motifs that include putti, Bees , mermaids, Roman/Greek deities, putti wearing togas and weilding swords, parrots, phoenix, griffins, Putti with devil tail, decorative scrolling, punched in pupils versus the commonly seen poked out pupils on faces. Appear to be either hand hammered or pressed. Both urns are lidded, but it appears that a smal soldering mark was done to keep the tops from being removed. This solder is not noticeable unless you look directly under the perimeter of the rim. Measurements of each large urn are: 15.5" x 6" x 5" Amazing detail~! Possibly English. I say this because of the presence of the griffin handles and dragon/phoenix. Although, with a fleur/wheat motif on the surface of the pour spout, it makes me tend to believe that they might be French, especially with the presence of the bee motif, Napoleon's personal animal totem and symbol. Though the pair of ewers are heavily patinated, traces of the gleaming metal, of which, I believe to be copper, or bronze are shining through. In very good antique condition. Ewers have not been cleaned. Refer to pictures for condition. No noticeable cracks. Neither ewer appears to lean, both seem symmetrical. I believe these to either be from the Empire period (reign of Napoleon I) or a later mid 19 th century revival work. T is quite a lot of beautifully detailed depiction going on on each ewer. Each ewer depicts a two sided vignette: 1ST 4 putti are depicted. Two of the four cherubs are crowning a seated cherub, with what appears to be a crown/helmet with a small dragon/phoenix adorning the top of the hat. the Fourth cherub stands in repose, with hand on sword as if ready to unsheath it. Reminescent of a coronation scene. 2nd 4 putti/cherub/fat baby people wearing togas are depicted. One cherub is seated playing what appear to be cymbals. Another cherub is standing playing cymbals. A third putti is standing playing what appears to be a bagpipe/lute things. The fourth putti reclines reading a tablet/book. Ewers also have classical roman/greek mythological faces on each side. It appears to be the god Apollo, the Goddess Minerva, Mercury, or some other ancient deity. Truly unlike anything that I have seen on Ebay especially those listed as Victorian. These seem more detailed and I believe that they may be English in origin, and possibly from the George IV through the William IV period in England. I have been unable to find a makers mark. I am uncertain as to the validity of this, but base my conclusions on the amount of detail and decorative style motifs on the ewers. They may be from the 1820-1837 period or possibly even older. I am not sure. I do know that they are unusual and appear to be high quality. Winner is responsible for packaging, shipment and insurance costs.
