This rare antique medical instrument, known as a Brown Buerger Cystoscope manufactured by American Cystoscope Makers, Inc, was one of the earliest instruments made that allowed a doctor to see inside the human body with out surgery. The device was used by gynecologists and urologists from as early as the 1890s all the way into the mid 20th century. It would have been inserted through the urethra enabling the doctor to view all the way into the bladder. The kit is housed in a beautiful black walnut case and has recessed compartments for everything. It contains both a Cystoscope and a Urethroscope along with a number of other devices that I've tried my best to capture in the pictures. There was also a "hidden" compartment that housed additional light bulbs, rubber end caps, lubricant and other assorted items. It even has the cord which would have been hooked up to an electrical supply to power the bulbs. This is, from what I can tell, a very complete set that was almost never used. Some pieces were still wrapped in their original waxed paper. The case measures 13" wide, by 6" deep, by 2 1/2" high.
