This is for a pair of the first two Brownie books written and illustrated by Palmer Cox as part of the series of humorous verse books and comic strips about the mischievous but kindhearted fairy-like sprites. "The Brownies Their Book" was published in 1887 by The Century Co. in New York. This first edition, hardcover book has a laminated cover and measures 10 ¼" x 8 ½". In good vintage condition with an inscription printed in pencil on the inside front cover and on page iii; pages 9/10, 11/12 and 13/14 are torn on the bottom; and there's age-related staining throughout. All 144 pages are intact and securely bound, however the outside of the binding and edges are worn. The second book in the series, "Another Brownie Book," was published by Century in 1890. This first edition, hardcover book has a laminated cover and measures 10 ¼" x 8 ½". In good vintage condition, there are approx. 1-2" tears at the bottom of most of the pages; the binding is "cracked" in some spots; P. 84 has a small pencil mark; and there's age-related staining throughout. All 144 pages are intact and securely bound, although the binding is loose and the outside edges of the book and binding are worn.They are both delightful books, and I've shown what I see as the major flaws of these 125+ year-old volumes.
