ONLY FOR THE MOST DISCERNING AND DEMANDING COLLECTOR OF FINE ART THIS MAGNIFICENT ARTISTIC DEPICTION OF THE FAMOUS LUDWIG CASTLE - NEUSCHWANSTEIN - IS A MUST. A RARE and ORIGINAL WOOD INLAY DONE WITH THE MOST INTRICATE METICULOUS DETAIL as only Masters like B&G could produce. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS ITEM IT WAS PURCHASED IN 1963-64 WHEN I WAS STATIONED WITH THE U.S. ARMY IN MUNICH, GERMANY. PLEASE ALSO SEE MY AUCTION FOR THE B&G TABLE WHICH I PURCHASED IN THE SAME TIME FRAME. Artists: BG on inlay pictures stands for Buchschmid & Gretaux. It was their signature trade mark for the highest standard of workmanship available. Every item thus signed is guaranteed to be perfect in every way, and, in design and execution, to be a product of that firm. TIMELESS in value now since both artists are deceased. B & G divided the corresponding tasks among themselves: Mr. Gretaux, the Artist, created the design, and Mr. Bushschmid, the Artisan, controlled the execution. These Artists from Germany created unique artforms in woods from the Black Forest in Germany. Both Artists are now gone, which adds to the value of their significant pieces of work. This inlay depicts the NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE. I would have to describe the condition as near mint, the picture itself is mint with no scratches, stains, lifting, dents or any other defects. The frame has very minute defects which can only be seen up very close and by turning a light various ways. For example in one of the pictures of the BG insignia t appears a spot a bit lighter than the others I call this a defect, others may not. To me t are no significant flaws, defects other than the tiniest of indentations on the perimeter of the frame. The back does show minor marring from being hung on the wall. If t are any questions concerning this item please feel free to call me at from 9am to 6pm Pacific Standard time. About The Neuschwanstein Castle--Situated in Southern Germany, finished nearly 100 years ago after 17 years building time. King Ludwig II of Bavaria, the so called "Mad King" built it. Ludwig built 3 Castles, Neuschwanstein, Linderhof near Oberammergau, and Herrenchiemsee, on an island in a lake along side Autobahn Munchen to Salzburg. The land of Bavaria is now owner and conservator of these marvelous attractions. The NEUSCHWANSTEIN was made renown as the Castle Disney patterned the Disneyland Castle after. Wood-inlay is an art form that originated in the Middle Ages. It is a very diversified art, since it displays thousands of different types of wood, grown worldwide, all with different colours and grains. The veneer is composed of paper-thin pieces of wood. These pieces are cut from samples carefully selected for knots, irregular grain, texture, or any feature the artist has in mind. Even today, very few people have mastered the art of wood-inlay, and it will always be impossible to mass-produce wood-inlay work. After carefully working out his design, the artist traces out that design on transparent paper. Copies of the finished drawing are then cut into pieces to be used as patterns for cutting out the wood. Each paper piece is placed on a chunk of wood, with special attention to the grain and texture. Then, the artist, using a jeweler's saw, cuts the wood to the shape of the paper piece placed on top. Each picture requires from 10-35 different kinds of wood and about individual pieces of wood. After the pieces have been cut out they are pasted in reverse fashion on paper. Both the paper with its glued-on wood pieces are turned over and the "wooden side" under intense pressure, is glued onto a flat piece of wood. At the same time a wooden veneer is pressed onto the reverse side of the wood; this prevents distortion. Upon completion of this process, the top layer of paper is removed, thus revealing the picture. Finally the picture is lacquered so that it resists the elements; yet, the grains and pores of the wood are easily discernibl...
