Buff & Buff Transit Level from a local surveyor's estate. Item comes with what appears to be original wooden dovetailed carrying case with leather strap. Screws are missing from strap, but strap is included. Leather strap is punched with Buff No. 21340. Transit has been well taken care of and is in very good condition. The number on the compass is 17883. Not sure if this is a model number or serial number but it matches the number stamped on the wooden case slide out base. Transit is almost all brass with sides painted black. All dials are clean and very readable. Almost as new I would think. All knobs turn easily and are functional.This is a very nice transit with a large compass and a level mounted under the scope section. It has a brass lens protector and what appears to be some sort of shade lens extention. T are no marks or distortion looking through the lens section. The case also has all the original labels on the inside including a return shipping label to: Buff & Buff, Jamaica Plain, Boston, Mass., that was never used. Oak tripod is painted red on bottom of the legs and white on the top. The brass threads are protected with a plastic cover that reads: C.L. Berger & Sons Boston, 3-1/2, 8 THD. Tripod is also in very good condition. I was told this transit is a very collectible antique instrument but I am not all that familiar with this type of equipment. I have some other items from the same estate, be sure to check them out. Thanks for looking.
