This listing today is for a built 1/72nd scale Avro Shackleton MR.3 long range maritime partol bomber which entered service in 1951 and was finally retired in 1990. The Shackleton was named after the famous British polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and was a development from the earlier Avro Lincoln, which replaced the famous Avro Lancaster. The MR.3, which is the subject of todays listing, was an improvement over previous models in that it featured tricycle landing gear, wing tip tanks and a redesigned wing with larger ailerons improved stability. This model included a galley and sleeping accommodations for the 10 man crew which were welcome improvements during flights of 15 hour duration. The MR.3, with its eight contra-rotating propellers, had a maximum speed of 300 mph, a range of 1950 miles, a service ceiling of 20,200 feet and an endurance approaching 15 hours. A total of 185 aircraft were built. This model was built from a very old Frog kit which I sent to a Pro builder to build for me. Since the kit came with a stand, he built it "wheels up" but included the landing gear under the landing gear doors. Frog cleverly positioned the pin for the stand inside the bomb bay at the center of gravity, so the plane can swivel while the stand remains stationary. Of course, this means the bomb bay doors remain open...ready for action! read more
